Construction Days 30 / 31

Afternoon Start start

Today was the first real firing of the homemade furnace.

The pot had been made previously which was to act as the crucible.

It was  charged with aluminium which had originally been water pumps and brought up to temperature in about 30minutes.

The previously make mould had been set on the ground near to the furnace and the hot metal 600C was poured in and the slag poured away for waste.
Here the casting has been turned over.
The sand has been knocked out of it and left in the mould ready to return to the original sack of sand.
Here the whole casting is in the lathe ready to face up and turn on its outer edge.
The face and outer edge has been turned.

The jaws of the three jaw chuck have been reversed ( actually substituted for external jaws ) and the centre bored out until it was a good fit to the wheel and hence will have a good fit of the brake blocks to the wheel in the finished position.
The finished ring of brake blocks ready to cut up drill and mill as shown previously Click here to see again.

This evening the machined casting was cut into the brake block size and drilled and milled ready to put together the other truck.

The foam has arrived as has the covering material so that should complete the truck tomorrow !!!

Construction Day 31

An evening spent putting together and sorting out the second truck so that they should both be finished by the weekend.
