Construction Days 20 / 21

Afternoon start

So here is the truck with its first venture onto the track at Mote Park, Maidstone, Kent and you can see the check rail and the foot rests have to be wider than that.

Enlarged to the front of the truck you can see the hooped iron which supports the check rail. The foot rest must also clear that else derailment is likely!

In the vice is set the second "Z" piece in the fore ground the first one has its two rows of holes. Note the unequal distance this is by design to take account of the angle iron used in the construction of the truck and allows the "Z" piece to be riveted into place.

The miller / driller has no indexation on the left hand wheel so a mark was made so that 4 turns of the handle moved the work piece 10mm which is the spacing of the holes.

All the "Z" piece made ready to start the riveting.

The "Z" piece is held in place and then drill using the drill stand shown in the previous days diary.

Here all the riveting has been done to the first "Z" piece 36 rivets and with 7 more "Z" pieces to go that is 252 rivets still needed but also 252 holes to drill.

The rivets and the 5mm Steel "Z" substantially strengthen the truck and enable it to comfortably carry a good load.

This work was carried oout on the 22nd day of construction.

Here is a truck complete with all the rivets section
