setting up the timing cannot be done
with the flywheel on the right hand side of the engine, adjacent to the timing
plate, so it must be removed.
The main crank shaft must be turned so
that the big end is at bottom dead centre, ie the piston is at its furthest
point down the cylinder.
The main gear must now be positions to
sit so that the cam is just moving the push rod. I had to move the gear relative
to the gear on the crank several times before I was satisfied that the cam
was just moving the push rod and then after one half revolution stopped
pushing the push rod.
Ignition should take place at about top
dead centre so wire up some form of buzzer so that when the striker touched
the pin in the gear it will sound. This will give you an indication as to
when the sparking plug will fire when connected to the ignition system. If
you do not have a buzzer then you could use the OHMS range on a multi-meter
or use an LED circuit. I cannot explain this in detail as I want to build
my engine.
When satisfied tighten down the striker
strip and make sure the wire leading from the striker strip is well out of
the way of the fly wheel and other moving part. |
