The Diary of the Building of a 5" gauge Stirling Single

Re-assembly continued

10 April 2026
This photo shows the regulator still in position. It was found to be impossible to replace the wet header with the regulator still in position.
The photo shows the rear of the gasket with sealant applied.

Photo shows the front of the gasket with sealant.

To reassemble the super heaters into the engine required, the removal of the regulator action from the rear of the engine and pulling the whole regulator right the way through to the front. This necessitated the removal of the rear assemble of the regulator, which was secured with a split pin which was very difficult to remove.  Then it was possible to align the wet header at the front and secure with two 2BA nuts.

The regulator has now to be reinserted through the front and locate into the regulator housing at the rear.

I found that I needed to take off the sealing back piece. This was achieved with a set of square ended pliers.

The photo shows the sealing part removed.

This revealed only a small hole and thus the original idea to be able to push  this rod connected to the regulator arm was impossible.

The photo shows the 4 bolts retaining the  regulator arm assembly have been removed but the assembly at the moment cannot be removed !

I think I will need to apply some gentle heat to break the seal!

Heat on the seal was tried but to no effect.

However, I managed to achieve the regulator back into position by using a tine brass rod and then pushing the regulator front end back into the small hole at the rear, removed the thin rod which had guided the main rod through and with gentle taps on a piece of wood the whole vale was positioned correctly.

The bolts wewre then replaced but I dropped one on the floor which was not found so another 5BA bolt had to be cut to length and screws into place.

The operating piece was then screwed onto to the rod but then I dropped the cross piece so that finished to days work and I still have to find the very small piece to steel on the floor.

With loosing the part I decided that I would fit a bolt in its place. a 5BA bolt fitted very well and closed with a nut and lock nut.

The photo shows the regulator open.

The photo shows the regulator fully closed.

The blanker was prepared with sealant applied to both sides of the gasket and the gasket then placed on the blanker fitting.

The blanker with the gasket was put in place and aligned by using a panel pin to make sure the holes aligned.

Two nut were placed into the socket so that the bolt protruded and then the four bolts were screwed into place.

They were tighten to a hand tight.

The boiler is now ready when the sealant has set for a home hydraulic test prior to on at the Club.

If it should fail at home then more work will be needed to prevent leakage of water.
