The Construction of "Basic Project Loco"

5th September 2007

I was inspired when I saw Michael Martin's web pages  and contacted him by email. How nice it was to get a response almost at once, the time difference between UK and USA being all that stopped it being immediate.

The first things was to locate a UK supplier of the "Midwest Model VI Steam Engine Kit"  but I found one at Steve Webb Models which arrived about 3 days after ordering.

After placing the order I searched Ebay for a supplier of Meccano Chain and gears and was lucky to find one and they arrive in a very quick time.

So what did I like about the loco.

  1. It is a home brew construction.

  2. It is a simple idea.

  3. It has chain drive so will have a lot of parts to observe working.

  4. It much timber construction.

May be I will think of other things but they are the main points.

This is how the box looked when first opened.
Taking a closer look
The Meccano Chain gears. The ratio that Martin has is 7T to 24T then 7T to 15T

It is quite obvious that I do not have a gear with 7T so will be sorting out a ratio as near as possible to Martin's suggestions.
